What exactly does “Portrait.Of.Pirates” or “P.O.P” mean?

Portrait.Of.Pirates, commonly abbreviated as P.O.P, literally means “Portrait of Pirates”. It is the name given by MegaHouse to its collectible figure range devoted exclusively to the One Piece universe.

How long have Portrait.Of.Pirates figures existed?

The Portrait.Of.Pirates range was launched in 2004. The first figures represented Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro and Nami. Since then, MegaHouse has developed more than 360 references and several generations of P.O.P figures.

Why does the P.O.P range include so many different collections?

MegaHouse adapts the names of its sub-ranges to the concept and period of One Piece being represented. What is the difference between P.O.P NEO, NEO-DX and Sailing Again?

Sailing Again, launched in 2011, accompanied the return of the characters after the two-year time skip in One Piece. It therefore mainly represents their new appearances and outfits from their reunion on the Sabaody Archipelago onwards.

What does Portrait.Of.Pirates MAXIMUM mean?

MAXIMUM refers to the branch that MegaHouse presents as the highest level of the Portrait.Of.Pirates range. Its principle is to push the sculpting, paintwork, size or complexity of the composition further, with the aim of allowing the designers to fully realise what they want to represent.

What does Portrait.Of.Pirates Playback Memories mean?

Playback Memories is a collection dedicated to characters and appearances from earlier periods of One Piece. It allows MegaHouse to revisit parts of the story that the anime has already moved beyond, with characters such as Miss All Sunday, Bell-mère, Nefertari Vivi, Sogeking and Mr. 2 Bon Clay.

Roronoa Zoro is an amusing exception: MegaHouse adapted the acronym to “Sitting On Cushion”, as he is seated on the floor on a Japanese cushion.

What is a P.O.P Ver.BB?

BB stands for “Bathing Beauty”. This collection mainly depicts female One Piece characters in swimwear, with poses and sculpts specifically designed around this theme. It includes characters such as Nami, Boa Hancock, Vivi, Rebecca, Reiju, Kalifa, Tashigi and Jewelry Bonney.

The suffixes BB_02, BB_03, BB_SP and BB_EX identify different sculpts, variants or special editions within this collection.

What is a P.O.P Ver.R?

The designation Ver.R indicates a reworked version of an existing figure. The nature of the changes depends on the model: it may involve a new sculpt, a different presentation or revised paintwork.

For the S.O.C Sanji Ver.R and Law Ver.R, MegaHouse revisits the original concept while offering a new version; Sanji notably receives partially revised colouring. Ver.R should therefore not be interpreted as simply an identical reissue.

What is the difference between a standard P.O.P and a P.O.P MAXIMUM?

A standard P.O.P primarily aims to provide a detailed representation of the character. A MAXIMUM pushes the sculpting, paintwork, pose or volume further to create a more spectacular piece. MegaHouse officially presents MAXIMUM as the pinnacle of the Portrait.Of.Pirates range.

This does not mean that a MAXIMUM figure necessarily has to be enormous: the concept is primarily based on the level of ambition behind the piece.

Are all P.O.P MAXIMUM figures the same size?

No. MAXIMUM does not correspond to a single size or scale. Dimensions depend heavily on the character and composition: Luffy Gear 4, Kaido, Big Mom, Zoro Asura and Sanji K×MAXIMUM, for example, have very different volumes.

Why do some P.O.P MAXIMUM figures carry the SA, WA, NEO or MAS designations?

These prefixes link the MAXIMUM figure to a particular P.O.P concept, generation or collaboration. MAXIMUM indicates the level of execution, while the prefix specifies the origin or context of the model. The MegaHouse catalogue therefore contains several MAXIMUM branches rather than one completely uniform series.

Are P.O.P MAXIMUM figures always larger than standard P.O.P figures?

No. They are often more imposing because of their poses, effects or characters, but MAXIMUM is not a size category.

What do SA-MAXIMUM, WA-MAXIMUM, NEO-MAXIMUM, MAS-MAXIMUM and K×MAXIMUM mean?

SA-MAXIMUM historically extends the Sailing Again generation into the MAXIMUM format; it was notably under this designation that the MAXIMUM range was relaunched in 2017 with Luffy Gear 4 Boundman.

WA-MAXIMUM refers to MAXIMUM figures associated with the universe developed through Warriors Alliance, particularly around the Wano arc, with characters such as Kaido, Yamato, Zoro, King and Trafalgar Law.

NEO-MAXIMUM reuses the historical NEO designation for certain major MAXIMUM pieces, notably Portgas D. Ace, Boa Hancock, Mihawk, Enel and Edward Newgate.

Older P.O.P figures and newer generations

Why are some older P.O.P figures much smaller than recent models?

The range has evolved considerably since 2004. The first generations focused on relatively simple and consistent figures, while MegaHouse gradually developed larger characters, more complex poses and collections such as MAXIMUM.

The difference therefore results both from the evolution of the range and from the body type of the character being represented.

Are older and newer P.O.P figures consistent in size?

Not always. Many figures do maintain a degree of consistency, particularly those designed around an approach close to 1/8 scale, but P.O.P is not currently a range governed entirely by a single scale.

MAXIMUM figures, naturally very large characters and certain themed collections can therefore show significant differences when displayed alongside the earliest generations.

Does MegaHouse improve P.O.P sculpting and paintwork from one generation to the next?

MegaHouse develops its techniques with each new generation. The manufacturer notably presents Evolutionary History as a collection combining 20 years of P.O.P experience with more recent techniques, illustrating this desire to continue evolving.

This does not mean that an older P.O.P is necessarily less successful: sculpting choices, the character and the intended style remain decisive factors.

Reissues and terminology used by MegaHouse

What do Repeat, Resale, Limited Reissue and Limited Reproduction mean?

MegaHouse uses several English terms to indicate the return of an older product. Repeat and Resale appear on references brought back to market without any major announced changes, while Limited Reissue or Limited Reproduction correspond to what the Japanese website generally calls a “limited reproduction edition” (限定復刻版).

The English terminology has not been completely consistent over the years: the same Japanese concept may be translated as “Reissue”, “Reproduction” or “Reprint”. It is therefore preferable to check the exact product page rather than systematically attributing a technical difference to each translation.

What does “Super Limited Reprint” mean on a Portrait.Of.Pirates figure?

This designation refers to a limited-quantity reissue of an older Portrait.Of.Pirates figure. MegaHouse uses the Japanese designation “超限定復刻版”, translated depending on the product page as “Super Limited Reprint” or “Ultra Limited Reproduction”.

The figure generally reproduces the previously released model, although certain elements such as the packaging may be modified. It is not a new P.O.P sub-range, but simply a limited return to production of an earlier reference.

Is a P.O.P Repeat or Limited Reissue identical to the first edition?

It normally uses the same figure and design when no modification is announced. Packaging, certain regulatory information, price or small variations associated with the new production run may nevertheless differ.

When the sculpt, colour scheme or presentation is deliberately changed, MegaHouse generally uses an additional designation such as Ver.R, New Ver., Ver.2 or another clearly identified variant.

Why does MegaHouse bring some older P.O.P figures back into production after several years?

MegaHouse regularly brings back models requested by collectors, notably to mark anniversaries of the range or when certain references have become difficult to find. The Zoro NEO-DX 10th LIMITED Ver., for example, was offered again as part of the double anniversary celebrating 25 years of the anime and 20 years of P.O.P.

P.O.P-specific size and display considerations

Are Portrait.Of.Pirates figures really 1/8 scale?

Many historical P.O.P figures were designed around a format close to or explicitly announced as 1/8 scale. MegaHouse, for example, clearly states this scale for Luffy Gear 4 Boundman SA-MAXIMUM.

However, not all Portrait.Of.Pirates figures should automatically be considered 1/8 scale. The catalogue includes many different collections, and MegaHouse often communicates only a height in millimetres without specifying a scale. P.O.P should therefore be regarded as a range whose scale varies depending on the reference.

Can a Portrait.Of.Pirates figure be displayed without its base?

It depends entirely on the figure. Some P.O.P models have a sufficiently stable pose to stand without their base, while others rely on the base or a support rod as an essential part of their stability.

It is not recommended to remove a support designed by MegaHouse from a heavy, leaning or dynamically posed figure. To determine whether a P.O.P can be displayed without its base, the construction of the specific reference should be checked.
