First 4 Figures: from its first licenses to video game statues

First 4 Figures was founded in 2003. Originally, the company was created to distribute Asian animation products manufactured in China to the UK market before quickly evolving towards the development of its own licensed products.

During its early years, First 4 Figures worked with licenses such as WWE, Transformers and G.I. Joe. From 2005 onwards, under the direction of Creative Director Alex Davis, the company increasingly shifted its focus towards video game universes.

This evolution became particularly significant with the acquisition of Nintendo licenses. In 2006, First 4 Figures notably announced collections dedicated to The Legend of Zelda and Metroid. These two universes would go on to play a lasting role in shaping the brand’s identity, before its catalogue expanded to include many other video game and animation franchises.

The Legend of Zelda, Sonic, Dark Souls, Metroid and many other licenses

Video games remain at the heart of the First 4 Figures catalogue. The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Super Mario, Kirby, Sonic the Hedgehog, Mega Man, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Banjo-Kazooie, Dark Souls, Sekiro, Metal Gear Solid, Silent Hill, Castlevania, Persona 5, Darksiders, Okami and Soulcalibur are among the universes developed by the manufacturer.

First 4 Figures also works with licenses from animation and manga, including Berserk, Cowboy Bebop, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, My Hero Academia, Yu-Gi-Oh! and Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Depending on the license, the brand adapts characters, creatures, vehicles, weapons and iconic objects in different forms, ranging from traditional statues to life-size replicas.

The main First 4 Figures ranges and formats

First 4 Figures is not limited to a single scale or material. Its catalogue combines large resin statues, PVC figures, busts, stylized models and reproductions of objects from video games.

Resin statues: the historic core of the catalogue

Resin statues occupy a central place in the history of First 4 Figures. They allow characters to be represented in carefully designed poses, often accompanied by bases directly inspired by environments, symbols or scenes from the original games.

Dimensions and scales vary considerably depending on the project. The brand may offer individual characters as well as larger compositions featuring several protagonists or recreating a specific scene.

Many statues also include light-up functions, interchangeable elements or additional accessories depending on the selected edition. Limited editions are generally accompanied by individual numbering and an authentication card.

PVC statues: characters in a more accessible format

First 4 Figures also develops an extensive catalogue of PVC statues. This material makes it possible to offer pieces that are generally more accessible and often more compact than large resin statues, while retaining poses, bases and compositions directly inspired by the relevant games or series.

The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Sonic the Hedgehog, Okami, Persona 5, Avatar: The Last Airbender and Dark Souls are among the licenses developed in this format.

Depending on the release, some versions may incorporate resin elements, LED functions or additional accessories.

Super Deformed (SD): characters in a deliberately stylized form

The Super Deformed collection, generally abbreviated as SD, reinterprets selected characters with deliberately exaggerated and more compact proportions while retaining their iconic features and equipment.

Dark Souls occupies an important place in this range, with characters such as Solaire of Astora, Artorias the Abysswalker, Dragon Slayer Ornstein, Siegmeyer and The Great Grey Wolf Sif. Depending on the model, SD statues may be made from resin or PVC, and some editions include light-up effects.

Grand Scale Busts: large-format collectible busts

Grand Scale Busts is dedicated to large-format collectible busts. This format allows the sculpting work to focus on the face, armor, clothing and the main defining features of the character.

Darksiders, Dark Souls, Spyro the Dragon and Metal Gear Solid are among the universes represented, with characters including War, Death, Fury, Strife, Artorias the Abysswalker, Spyro and Solid Snake.

Life Size Replicas: in-game objects reproduced at full scale

First 4 Figures also recreates selected iconic video game objects as Life Size Replicas. These pieces are designed to reproduce the object as it might appear at full size within its original universe.

The Legend of Zelda is particularly well represented in this category with Majora’s Mask, the Sheikah Slate and various interpretations of the Master Sword. Metroid has also been represented through a replica of Samus’s helmet, while Crash Bandicoot is notably represented by the Aku Aku mask.

Dioramas and iconic scenes

Part of the First 4 Figures catalogue is built around more complex compositions featuring several characters or recreating a recognizable scene. These pieces go beyond the traditional representation of a single character to recreate a moment or environment directly inspired by the game.

This approach can notably be found in the Sonic the Hedgehog, The Legend of Zelda, Cowboy Bebop, Ori and Dark Souls universes, with compositions focusing on the interaction between the characters and their surroundings.

Standard, Exclusive, Collector’s and Definitive Editions

Many First 4 Figures products are available in several editions. Their content varies depending on the individual release, but certain names appear regularly throughout the catalogue.

Standard or Regular Editions generally represent the basic version of a piece. Exclusive Editions may add specific elements such as interchangeable accessories, light-up effects, alternative poses or other additional features.

For certain PVC statues, First 4 Figures also uses the Collector’s Edition designation. The Definitive Edition generally represents the most complete version of a product, with additional elements that may include a more elaborate base, LED effects or extra sculpts and accessories.

The exact configuration nevertheless depends on each individual product: these edition names do not correspond to identical content across all collections.

Why collect First 4 Figures products

First 4 Figures stands out in particular for its long-standing presence in the world of video game statues and for the diversity of licenses it has adapted since the early 2000s. Its catalogue combines historic Nintendo franchises with universes such as Dark Souls, Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania and Berserk.

From large resin statues to PVC models, from Super Deformed figures to Grand Scale Busts and Life Size Replicas, the manufacturer offers several ways to represent the same universe. This diversity allows collectors to choose pieces suited to the available display space, the desired character and the type of presentation they prefer.
