From cult 1980s TV shows to today's productions
TV show collectible figures cover a wide variety of universes, from programmes that defined the 1980s and 1990s to major productions currently released on streaming platforms.
For many collectors, this category remains strongly associated with nostalgia. M.A.S.K., Captain Future, Masters of the Universe, ThunderCats, Ulysses 31, G.I. Joe, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Star Trek are among the series whose characters, vehicles and creatures have accompanied several generations. Some franchises are now enjoying a new lease of life thanks to manufacturers revisiting their historical toys or developing more detailed collectibles.
The way we watch TV shows has nevertheless changed considerably. Programmes broadcast at fixed times on television have been joined by streaming platforms, allowing international productions to reach very large audiences almost immediately. Disney+ and Netflix, in particular, have contributed to the growing number of series based on major universes such as Star Wars and Marvel, while introducing new characters and costumes that are quickly adapted into collectible figures.
A TV show figure can therefore represent either a cartoon hero discovered forty years ago or a character introduced only a few months earlier in a contemporary production.
From retro figures to realistic actor likenesses
Manufacturers take very different approaches depending on the series and period being represented.
Some collections primarily aim to recreate the aesthetics of historical toys and cartoons. Manufacturers such as The Loyal Subjects and HL Pro revisit classic franchises while retaining much of their original visual identity and using modern production techniques.
At the other end of the spectrum, some contemporary figures aim for a much closer resemblance to the actors and costumes seen on screen. Hot Toys figures in 1/6 scale notably combine realistic portraits, fabric clothing and numerous accessories, as do products by EXO-6, which develops an extensive collection dedicated to the different generations of Star Trek.
Iron Studios statues, often produced in 1/10 scale, instead favour a fixed pose and sculpted composition. NECA also occupies an important position in articulated figures based on numerous television and movie licences.
These different approaches make it possible to collect the same medium in very different forms, from deliberately retro figures to detailed reproductions of characters as they appear in recent TV productions.
Articulated figures, statues and large collectibles
There is no single format specific to figures based on TV shows.
Depending on the licence and manufacturer, a character may be released as a small articulated action figure, a 1/6 scale figure dressed in fabric clothing, a 1/10 scale statue or a much larger collectible statue.
The choice therefore depends as much on the character as on the interpretation offered by the manufacturer. An articulated figure allows poses and scenes to be varied, while a statue focuses on a specific composition. Larger realistic figures generally aim to reproduce the actor's facial features, clothing and on-screen accessories more faithfully.
This diversity also makes it possible to combine several formats within the same collection, adapting each piece to the importance given to the character or the available display space.
Collecting the TV shows that defined a generation
Collecting TV show figures often means keeping a physical representation of a universe to which the collector remains attached.
For some collectors, it is about rediscovering the heroes of programmes watched during childhood and sometimes the toys they once owned. For others, the collection is built around more recent series, a particular actor, costume or especially memorable scene.
The boundary between nostalgia and contemporary productions has also become increasingly fluid. Many historical franchises continue to be revived, adapted or reinterpreted, while the Star Wars, Marvel and Star Trek universes now extend across several generations of TV series.
A collection of TV show figures can therefore easily bring together characters from an animated series of the 1980s with those from a recent Disney+ or Netflix production: it is above all the series and characters that have left an impression on the collector that give the collection its coherence.
