Masters of the Universe: from Mattel toys to collectible figures

Launched by Mattel in the early 1980s, the Masters of the Universe franchise was built around characters such as He-Man, Skeletor, Teela, Man-At-Arms and Evil-Lyn, in a universe combining heroic fantasy, science fiction and fantastic creatures.

Figures have played a central role in the history of the franchise: the first Mattel toys helped define the appearance of the characters and were accompanied by comics and later by the famous animated series. More than forty years later, Masters of the Universe continues to be represented in very different formats, from Mattel figures inspired by vintage toys to large collectible statues.

This diversity makes it possible to collect MOTU in many different ways: rediscover the aesthetics of the 1980s, choose modern articulated figures, revisit the style of the 200X series or display larger statues.

Masters of the Universe statues by Tweeterhead

Masters of the Universe statues by Tweeterhead occupy a premium position and offer particularly detailed interpretations of the characters of Eternia.

The history of this collection is closely linked to Sideshow Collectibles. Several of the earliest MOTU statues in this family were marketed by Sideshow as part of a collaboration with Tweeterhead, which was involved in their development and production. Tweeterhead later continued this approach directly under its own brand, developing new statues and larger-scale compositions.

These pieces do not necessarily seek to reproduce a Mattel figure or a specific version from the animated series exactly. They often combine different influences from throughout the history of the franchise to offer more detailed interpretations of the characters' armour, costumes, weapons and physiques.

Made primarily from resin, Tweeterhead statues can reach substantial dimensions and are particularly suited to collectors looking for a centrepiece for their display.

Masters of the Universe figures by Mondo: from 1/6 scale to 1/12 scale MOTU200X

Mondo develops several approaches to Masters of the Universe through its articulated figures.

The Mondo Masters of the Universe 1/6 scale collection features large figures measuring around 30 cm and supplied with numerous accessories, hands, portraits and interchangeable elements. Some releases also use fabric parts.

Mondo does not simply enlarge the Mattel toys from the 1980s. The characters are reinterpreted by combining different influences from throughout MOTU history: classic artwork, vintage toys, animated series and the manufacturer's own artistic choices.

The brand is also developing a 1/12 scale MOTU200X collection dedicated to the aesthetics of the series and toys released in the early 2000s. He-Man, Skeletor, Teela and Keldor return with the sharper silhouettes and distinctive designs characteristic of this period.

Masters of the Universe Art Scale 1/10 statues by Iron Studios

Masters of the Universe Art Scale 1/10 statues by Iron Studios offer another way to collect the characters of Eternia.

These are hand-painted fixed-pose figures in 1/10 scale, generally accompanied by a detailed base. Their format provides strong visual presence while remaining considerably more compact than larger collectible statues.

Iron Studios is developing the range around numerous characters, making it possible to create a visually consistent display. It is therefore particularly suitable for collectors who want to bring together several heroes and villains in the same cabinet without requiring the space needed for very large statues.

Masters of the Universe Origins: rediscovering the spirit of Mattel's 1980s toys

The Masters of the Universe Origins range was developed by Mattel to directly recapture the appearance and format of the classic figures from the 1980s.

The characters retain the stocky proportions, colours and retro aesthetics of the original toys in an approximately 5.5-inch format. Their construction is modern, however, with more points of articulation.

Origins has gradually expanded beyond simple versions inspired by the earliest toys, introducing new characters, vehicles and different interpretations of the universe.

For collectors who grew up with Mattel toys in the 1980s, Origins is probably the current range that comes closest to the visual experience of the original collection.

Masterverse: Masters of the Universe in a modern format

With Masterverse, Mattel offers larger figures, generally around 18 cm tall, with proportions and articulation closer to current action figure standards.

The collection began around the universe of Masters of the Universe: Revelation before expanding to different interpretations of the franchise: Revolution, New Eternia, New Adventures, the 1987 film and Vintage designs directly inspired by the original toys.

Masterverse therefore does not follow a single artistic direction. Two figures from the collection can represent the same character according to very different periods or interpretations of Masters of the Universe.

What is the Masterverse Vintage Collection?

The Masterverse Vintage Collection revisits classic Masters of the Universe designs while adapting them to the modern Masterverse format.

The characters retain an appearance directly inspired by the vintage toys, but in an approximately 18 cm format, with more detailed proportions and a much greater number of articulation points.

This range therefore offers an interesting alternative for collectors who appreciate the historical appearance of MOTU but do not want the smaller format and distinctive proportions of Origins figures.
